BANGLADESH: Return of the bird flu threat (IRIN)

Later flu pandemics were not so devastating. They included the 1957 Asian Flu (type A, H2N2 strain) and the 1968 Hong Kong Flu (type A, H3N2 strain), but even these smaller outbreaks killed millions of people. In later pandemics antibiotics were available to control secondary infections and this may have helped reduce mortality compared to the Spanish Flu of 1918.

DHAKA, 15 November 2007 (IRIN) - Avian flu has re-emerged in Bangladesh after four months, with five reported new outbreaks in poultry farms across the country since October.

WHO group to tackle H5N1 virus-sharing dispute (CIDRAP)

Nov 19, 2007 (CIDRAP News) – A World Health Organization (WHO) working group will meet in Geneva over the next 4 days to try to solve an impasse over how countries share their H5N1 avian influenza virus samples, a disagreement that pits developing countries' demand for affordable vaccines against the global need to monitor virus changes and develop pandemic vaccines.

Study cites risks to premature babies (Los Angeles Times)

Babies born just a few weeks early are six times more likely to die in their first week of life than full-term babies and three times more likely to die before their first birthday, researchers from the March of Dimes and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Monday.

The flu can be a serious illness, particularly for mature populations aged 50 and older, and those with chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. Flu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. Track the flu in your area.
