Unsafe drinking water Water supplies in European and other industrialized countries are generally considered safe by US standards. However, drinking water (including ice cubes and water used for brushing teeth) in remote areas or developing countries should be avoided because of the risk of giardiasis and infection with numerous other intestinal pathogens.
