Prednisone is recommended for persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma. In addition, a mild hypnotic agent (eg, zolpidem tartrate [Ambien]) can be helpful for adjusting to new sleep schedules. The need for other medications, such as prophylactic drugs for malaria and altitude sickness, should be determined on the basis of the traveler's destination.
