Cabin pressure in most aircraft is maintained at a level equivalent to that at altitudes of 8,000 ft or lower, which results in a decrease of PaO2 to about 60 mm Hg in healthy persons. Passengers with lung disease and a preflight PaO2 of less than 70 mm Hg or an oxygen saturation of less than 93% may require supplemental oxygen during the flight.
